Work in Progress

Softwares as a service

In using joomla administrators section, I initially found it very difficult to figure out what everything was and was used for. Slowly, I started recognizing what the module manager was. This was to position different things in areas you want them to be. Then, I started working with the menu manager. Here, I wrote what topics I wanted in given sections. I then started using the article manager. Here, I added articles I wanted and then I could add them into whichever menus I wanted to use them with. Eventually, I added extensions to enhance the external potential for people to get an outlook of about the hunting and fishing world. Overall, I thought joomla was initially incredibly difficult to use, but over time, this became less difficult by the amount of time, effort and use invested in using joomla. One thing that still makes me think I why can't they just be a little more specific when ordering menus and extensions the way you want them to. I think adding templates is the main problem because in many of the free templates, you can only use a few select positions and then it is difficult to arrange them in orders that you would like.

Example of similar sites

In researching my site, I looked at a couple other sites that had similar topics and related to hunting fishing and eating. First, I took a look at http://www.outdoorlife.com/. Here, it gave me a foundation of what I wanted to do with my site. I liked how it had new articles on the front page as like a feed and it was very organized. Next, I looked at http://www.fieldandstream.com/channel. Here I really liked the use of how it put up photos and videos on their website in words underneath the topics of hunting and fishing. On my blog with my template, this was very difficult to do. I got many of my articles from these two sites just as examples to show what the site would look like with good articles in them. For the eating section of my website, I decided to go to simples sites like food.com and recipe.com to add recipes of things one can hunt or catching fishing. So I also wanted to add recipes to the feature articles and new articles in the front. I could have organized this part a little better and give a timeline or something, but having complications, I left as is.

Research into extensions

In researching extensions I had a couple of initial ideas. First, I wanted the community and public to be able to comment and like each posts to create a social media and community-building atmosphere. I also thought about putting new news articles on related topics to hunting and fishing but this would make my website a little Closter phobic by having to many articles to really have a sense of what the website is for. I wanted to create something where hunters and fishers have a guide or something they can go to everyday and be more aware about hobbies of that nature.  Then I thought to go for a more simple approach. I would rather add something a little more constructive to help hunters and fishers make better decisions in terms of their hobbies. I decided to just add a three-day temperature extension called Zap Weather. I did not want this extension to cover a whole webpage, but just something to be on the side when reading articles of the day. This will give hunters and fisherman a better idea of what to wear on hunting trips and how much the temperature will drop during sunset hours so that they may be well suited for when the time comes.

Idea for Joomla

Initially when I had started to think of ideas about what I was going to put on my website. First, I thought about making a cooking website, but then I found out we didn't need to write our own blog posts, so I thought of adding more to my website so that I could post more articles. I decided to add hunting and fishing because to cook meats, you need to hunt and gather to then be able to eat the food. In these sections I thought I could download a photo gallery and video gallery to show what hunting and fishing is done to be able to cook these foods. Other ideas I thought to create for my website included a center that tells you all the local hotspots and deals that are happening in Charleston. This idea was a little ambitious because that would have been incredibly time consuming with time I don't have. Another idea was to make a weather update for your local area and projected forecast during the day with sunrise and sunset and tides, but this would have also been very time consuming. I decided to add a couple things I loved together in choosing hunting, fishing and eating.
